Timorese Animal Lovers

About TOHA - A non-profit organisation campaigning for animal protection and welfare in Timor-Leste  Description Timor Oan Hadomi Animal (TOHA) is a non-profit organization focusing on animal welfare and protection in Timor-Leste.

TOHA intends to engage with the Timorese public to draw more attention to the condition of animals in this country and to facilitate veterinary support where it is needed. We believe that through TOHA’s activities, Timorese people will have more humane perspectives in animal care, whether they are pet owners or depend on livestock for their livelihood.

TOHA aims to involve as many people as possible, acting as a focal point for initiatives to create a better environment for animals in this country. We will act at national and local level, through public education and training programmes, door-to-door campaigns, individual animal treatments, distribution of medicines and intensive consultations.

TOHA is an association of veterinarian doctors and lay people who are dedicated to improving animal—and therefore human—welfare in Timor-Leste. Membership is open to all. The organisation will be funded by voluntary contributions, donor/governmental support and corporate sponsorship, and its activities are carried out by unpaid volunteers.

Our Mission Statement

The issue of animal welfare has received very little attention in the public arena in this country. The production of quality livestock is of crucial economic importance to almost all citizens of Timor-Leste. Animal health is closely linked to public health, whilst TOHA’s work in preventing animal cruelty will have significant positive cultural and social impacts.

TOHA’s activities will cover the following aspects of animal welfare:

Public education: good livestock husbandry and the prevention of cruelty
Veterinary treatments and preventative care
Animal rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing
Control of feral domestic animals
Prevention of animal—human cross-infectious diseases
Positive social change through changing attitudes to cruelty—working with Timorese youth groups
Promotion of Timorese livestock as a mainstay of the country’s economy
Working towards drafting and enforcing legislation to prevent cruelty to animals

The Animal Shelter

The animal shelter and Dili Vet Clinic are at the hub of the TOHA organization. The shelter is small at present but is already accepting animals that have been rescued, giving them veterinary care and offering them a refuge until they are re-homed. We hope to expand the facilities in the future. Some of the animals we see have been subjected to terrible cruelty, like TOHA, a dog named after our organisation, who was rescued from a dogmeat restaurant where she sustained appalling injuries to both her hind legs, which had to be amputated. She will be equipped with a wheelchair and, as our mascot, help the TOHA group in its mission to raise awareness of animal cruelty issues.
Dr Antonino do Karmo MVS provides veterinary services through his Dili Vet Clinic, which is equipped with an operating theatre, including neutering and vaccinations for all animals at the shelter. Once animals have been rehabilitated, they are offered for adoption to people who are committed to caring for them permanently.

How can you help TOHA?

There are several ways you can offer support to TOHA:

Make a financial donation
Adopt an animal
Contribute food for the animals
Provide equipment and veterinary supplies such as: food dishes, bedding, cages or containers, collars, leashes, muzzles, products such as shampoos, parasite treatments, etc.
Give a few hours of your time to work with the animals - cleaning, washing, socializing, etc.
Help us with running and developing the TOHA association, as a committee member or by assisting with administration. We also need help with English-Tetum translations
Organise a fundraising event

Larger-scale technical and financial support is also needed from donors, NGOs and Governments:

To extend the animal shelter and set up a TOHA office with permanent staff
To help us to devise and run public education campaigns, veterinary health roadshows, pet care workshops for adults and children and anti-cruelty programmes for youth groups.
To assist TOHA in supporting the development and promotion of a humane Timorese livestock industry
To offer advice on drafting and enforcing anticruelty legislation
To offer veterinary and para-vet training to Timorese people
