In May of this year a team of MAF staff will travel to Mareeba, pick up a wheelbarrow and run for 140km.
No they haven't gone crazy, they will actually be a part of race that boasts 450 annual competitors.
The Great Wheelbarrow Race is known not only for testing the endurance of many competitors, but for raising large amounts of money for various charities.
The race goes for 3 days - from Mareeba to Dimbulah to Almaden to Chillagoe all while pushing a wheelbarrow! it is certainly not for the faint-hearted.
So, what on earth would inspire a team of 10 MAF staff from the Cairns and Mareeba support offices to do this?
Put simply, fuel.

The President of Timor-Leste, Dr. José Ramos-Horta, today officially announced the Dili 'City of Peace' Marathon, which will take place on Saturday the 18th of June of this year. Aiming to attract between 1500-2000 participants, including several international elite and celebrity athletes, this world-class race will be a landmark event for the country and launch Timor onto the international running calendar. www.dilimarathon.com
2013 Darwin Dili Yacht Rally
The 2013 Darwin Dili Yacht Rally will start from Darwin on Saturday 13 July 2013. The course is from the Start Line in Darwin Harbour, Australia, leaving Jaco Island to port, to the Finish Line off the city of Dili, Timor-Leste, a distance of 425 NM. The 2013 Notice of Event Schedule of events and Sailing Instructions are now available.
Greetings to all TdT riders & vols from the last four years.Tour de timor is on again in September 2013! The dates are set for six days of madness-sorry riding/racing from Monday 2 September until Saturday 7 September. All participants must be in-country by Sunday 1 September at the very latest and able to fly out again on the following Sunday’s flights.Last year’s crossing into Indonesia was a great success and we are keeping to the six stage style that you know and love. we have two proposed routes for 2013 which are under consideration (due to the incredibly late wet season this year our initial reconnoissance evaluations have been somewhat delayed in the mountains and the south coast), the final decision will be made in the coming weeks and revealed shortly on our website.
